Back-Boiler removal required for Gas Fire ??

Hi,

I have bought a second hand house and am looking at getting a new fireplace installed (e.g. hearth, mantlepiece, surround). We already have a Gas Fire in the fireplace and this is good enough to stay, just need to change the fireplace as it is an old 1970's style.

The fireplace was a standard solid fuel with back-boiler that was converted to gas at some stage. There is gas central heating in the house so the back-boiler is no longer used.

When I went and asked about getting the fireplace replaced I was told that if there was a back-boiler it would have to be disconnected (if not already done) and the water drained off at a cost of about €300. If this was already done, then it would have to be blocked up at a cost of approx €60. They said that this was a new regulation from Bord Gáis and it maybe best if the back-boiler was even removed.

Has anyone had this done, or heard of this regulation from Bord Gáis ???

Thanks

Checked the Bord Gáis website and the place where I inquired about the fireplace is listed as a registered Gas Installer so maybe it is correct procedure
