Is it possible to reduce income tax, by setting up as a contractor? Or are there any better ways?

If you are thinking of setting up as a contractor (sole trader or limited company presumably?) then you might want to get independent, professional advice from an accountant/tax advisor since there are more implications than just income tax involved. For example see this summary guide:
