A bank advised the computer may be infected with this virus based on recent credit card tansactions.I downloaded the AVG8 as per AAM and wonder will this protect computer against this virus? Also , because of new download, I cannot access an online account.Would anyone have comments regarding these queries?

Sinowal is meant to be hard to detect once it has become entrenched on your system, the virus is a trojan with rootkit features which changes your MBR(master boot record). It targets online banking and credit card transactions by detecting when the user visits a genuine financial web site and replacing the page with a fake version in order to capture the account or card data.

The trojan targets MS operating systems so part of your protection might be to change from IE to firefox.

AVG is one of the best free antivirus programs around but if I was you I would not rely on a free version anti virus product and would consider wiping the HDD and reinstalling the OS.

Avira and Kaspersky are two very good anti virus products

How do you wipe the HD and reinstall the OS?Do you bring the computer to an IT specialist or can someone talk you through it over the phone?

You reinstall the operating system and reformat the disk while doing so. This will wipe everything off the computer so make sure you back up documents, photos, videos, etc. and make sure you have installation disks and license information for any software that will need to be reinstalled. If you're not sure what you are doing, it might be best to get someone who does to help.
