Hi, just to looking for a general reaction to a recent quote I got for necessary NCT works (great timing!)

I need a rear left wheel bearing and 2 brakes hoses (rear) replaced. Quoted 450 - 550 inlcuding labour by a nationwide garage chain ( have just spent 1,000e with them getting it ready for the NCT and it failed on these items).

Car is a 2000 BMW 316iSe. Anyone have any ideas if this is about right? I have tried ringing other local garages for quotes today but none will commit to pricing (despite this being the only work needed). Any opinons?

PS: If anyone is interested in buying a lovely BMW.... :)

The number one rule with your NCT test is not to do pre NCT check.

I think the price is reasionable seeing they will have to replace the wheel bearing, with the brake hoses the system will have to be drained, refilled, bleed and road tested. All up theres about 4-5 hours work involved with parts and consumables.

A rear wheel bearing kit from EuroCarParts.com (original equipment make) is £21.50 (£13.95 if you want to save more and get spurious parts) . Brake hoses are a few euro (although it's more than likely it's brake lines, thin metal ones...still very cheap).

Max €50 parts. €500 labour to replace these is a laugh and could be done in an hour by one mechanic.

Take it to an independent mechanic and tell the others to jump.

Yes, I'm guessing so too, don't mind paying the amount once I feel its in line with even average costs. Other work was essential unfortunately (tyres, tracking etc.. the list goes on..!!) I think something smaller and more economical to run and maintain may be in order sometime soon

Pique318 - Thats killer when I see the price of the parts, but I do know from experience how long it takes to change bearings (may have hub also). I've tried a few local garages and can't get even a ball park figure from any of them as to costs including labour. Been stung before by local guy, wasn't happy.

Mathepac - I'll tell you where I park and where to find the keys... :)
