Avant Money Credit Card-additional PayPal fees

Noticed on my online Avant Money Credit card account a cash advance fee of €2.50

Rang to check if this was fraudulent activity. It wasn't its a new charge on the Mastercard side, related to PayPal payments for online purchases.

As they hadn't sent me a notice that this was a new charge, they reversed it. Won't be paying via Mastercard for such purchases in future.

Were you adding PayPal credit (potentially cash advance), or paying with your card via a merchant that accepts PayPal? (should not be a cash advance).

Paid for an item bought online using the credit card linked to my PayPal account.

Was it using checkout on a merchant website? Or transferring to a PayPal user account using their email address?

Direct Paypal payments classed as personal/family and friends will attract cash advance fees from some issuers. But purchases from online businesses should not.

That sounds like something that Avant should really be nortifying everyone about, before they begin to apply charges.

I'm also an Avant credit card customer, and it's the first I've heard of it.

I'd be very surprised if Avant are now classifying all Paypal purchases as cash advances. Other than accidentally.

It's an odd one, rang them and asked if I had been notified and she checked and replied I hadn't and said she'd reverse it.

This is Mastercard driving this change apparently.

Are you comfortable sharing the website you paid on? Have you paid them via PayPal with the same card before?

This doesn't sound right to me. The Avant agent could have been misinformed, or the merchant could be setup strangely.

Yes struck me as odd but these guys speak with such authority that all you can do is believe what you're told.

Transaction was for an item bought second hand on Adverts.

OK, so your payment was classified as a money transfer to the (private?) seller, hence the fee.

This fee is not new and wouldn't be charged when paying on a merchant website with PayPal.

I stand over this statement.

Normal online purchases will not attract this fee, which already existed. Paying a person with PayPal could/ should always have attracted a credit card cash advance fee.

It's more likely to be Avant who have changed their treatment of funding Paypal transfers from credit card (again, from Avant"s point of view, this is not an online purchase - you are not checking out on a merchant website).
