automatic log off?

I have failed to log off from eircom isp and even though i turned off my computer i discover that i am still logged on the following day with the appropriate bill accumulating!
Is it possible to avoid this e.g. to set an automatic log off once a key has'nt been activated for a set time? (this is abiut the 3rd time i have been caught)
would be grateful for any reply
 
Do you mean dial-up or (time limited?) broadband? If it's dial-up then I find it very difficult to believe that switching off the PC whose modem is connected to the phone line did not disconnect. If it's broadband then you may need to switch off your router as well. Perhaps you can clarify your setup?
 
logged off rather than switched off computer. i.e. left it on stand by.
