Auto renewing subscription

I took out a subscription for Gymondo app last year.
I put a note in my calendar to cancel it, but life got hectic and I didn't think of it again until the day of renewal.
I went into my account to find it was inactive, which meant I couldn't cancel my subscription. (I should add that I hadn't used the app in months; on reflection I should have cancelled it a lot earlier but I thought I would lose access so didn't want to before the year was up just in case I ever wanted it.)

I emailed customer service and they said that I couldn't cancel my subscription until I had paid for this year, as my renewal date had passed and my account had thus become inactive since they hadn't received payment.

My question is, as I do not want to renew do I have to pay them this money? I assume the T and Cs say I am in a contract with them. What will happen if I don't pay it? I'm worried but also the subscription is 90 euro. I have emailed back and forth over the past few days to try and explain and ask for leniency but am getting nowhere. I know it is my own fault. Do I just have to pay up and look cheerful?
 
You could look for a refund directly and if you don’t get it initiate a chargeback via your card provider.

I’ve found apps have very different policies on this. Some seem to make all their money from inertia and accidental renewals like yours and are hesitant to reimburse. Something like Amazon Prime reimburses quite easily as they want you to sign up again.
 
In general I like a sign-up via App Store as it’s so easy to get your money back.

Apple seems to prefer keeping customers happy much more than merchants.
 
I haven't paid any money for this year. The card I took out the subscription with was replaced during the year after I lost it. Hence the reason they couldn't take the money and froze my account, leaving me unable to cancel the subscription. They want me to pay the money by an alternative method and then they will reactivate the account and allow me to cancel my subscription, which just seems counter intuitive to me. I'm just wondering if I have to send the money and will they pursue me if I don't.
 
Tried to do a chargeback for the first time ever with BOI and found it quite difficult. All done online but they wanted proof of terms and conditions and how they were breached by the seller. Wonder if people have much success with chargebacks?

I have been caught out with audible and such and where previously Amazon would refund if you did not use the service the policy has changed lately. I personally have never had any luck getting a subscription refunded when I forgot to cancel.
 

I think you have zero hope of getting a refund if you pay it. Often cards are linked and subscriptions follow so to be careful in that regard. I would do a formal email advising you will not be taking the subscription again and hopefully thats the end of it.
 
Yes I agree, I do think it would be silly to send the money.
I have no expectation that they would refund me, just that they will then allow me to properly cancel my subscription. That's the only reason I was thinking I should send it, as I am worried about accumulating a debt with them!
 
They've cancelled your account because it was not paid, but they want you to pay to un-cancel their cancellation in order for you to cancel the account

Their T&C's don't really say anything much about non payment except that access to the service will be stopped and unusually they seems to be quite fair in that you only need to notify them one day ahead.

I wouldn't be concerned in any way whatsoever and my guess is there are thousands more like you every month
