Australian Boyfriend - can we get a mortgage?

Hi, myself and my boyfriend have decided to live in Ireland, I am Irish, he is Australian. He has been sponsored to work here by the company he works for. We are both in full-time employment. A mortgage broker has informed me that a bank will not lend to us as he is on a sponsorship visa and if he looses his job he is not entitled to stay in the country.

Can anybody advise a way around this, without having to get married as we're only young. My parents can go guarantor on our mortgage. We have a deposit and are not looking to overborrow.

Any suggestions on banks that could help us?

Thanks
Ciara

Ciara,
I suspect what you might have to do is get the mortgage in your own name only. If you are tight on income, maybe your folks might go guarantor. If your boyfriend does get the appropriate visa/documentation in due course, he could be added to title deeds and mortgage. I am pretty sure I could help you with that. I am a broker!

Hi,

I know I couldn't afford a mortgage on my own and would have to get help from my parents if my boyfriend wasn't considered on the mortgage. My boyfriend is being sponsored so has a permanent job here but the problem with sponsorship visas is that they are valid for one year and renewable each year. We plan on living here and eventually (after 5 years living and working here) he will be able to apply for residency.
I spoke to a girl in AIB and she said they have given mortgages to people on similar visas before but that I would be the principal person on the morgage, which is no problem but obviously we would want both our names on the deeds to the house.

Do you think with sponsorship visa documentation, and my parents going guarantor we could get a mortgage and have both our names on the deeds?
Thanks for your help!

Ciara,
I think there is a fair to good chance of getting it the way you wish. Not for definate though!

He works as a recruitment consultant.

I'm going to apply through a mortgage broker - so I'll see how we get on and let you know.
