I'm trying to gauge what a 2& a half week holiday in Oz could be done for, sticking to the cheapest flights and budget hotels, with the aim being to see as much as possible.

Any experienced travellers have a clue?

the price all depends on when you want to travel. you should allow €1000 approx for flights. cheapest is to work throught london http://www.emirates.com/uk/english/plan_book/plan_and_book.aspx and get cheap connecting flight. or with for a price from dublin.
when you are going that far it could work out better value to get a round the world ticket.
i have travelled from perth to sydney on a bus. it takes a few days (with stop-offs) after a few hours it all starts to look the same - would not do it again.

forget hotels, all 25 euro per night and hostel it,internal flight are circa 125 euro. Youll need them to get around in just 2.5 weeks, thats barely enough time to see the east coast. Get kakado in and ayer7 rocak if po7sible

Thinking about going in July/August. We want to include Sydney, Melbourne, the Home & Away beach (you'd have to!), Uluru, Great Ocean Road, Whitsundays maybe.
We'd like to do some of the various daytrips on offer from the cities. We fancy driving a fair bit too as we're not really for sitting on a beach day after day.

So after flights and cheap accomondation we're trying to figure out what kind of cost would be involved to make a decent holiday.
