For those of you who like to listen to audio books, check out librivox. If you're into it, they're looking for people to contribute with recordings of books with the end goal of having recordings for all books. Nice idea.
 
Dont think so. they say they want to record books that are in the public domain so I dont think youd see harry potter in there.
Does anyone know what determines whether a book is in the public domain or not? If you look at the catalog , theres books from joyce and stevenson. Im downloading "the call of the wild" at the moment, I like the way its split into chapters and the chapters are (mostly) read by different readers. Am going to try and listen to it in the car for a week and turn off the radio.
 
Joyce's works are not public domain (yet). They are still the copyrighted property of the Joyce estate.

Copyright on books in Ireland lasts for the life of the author plus 70 years - as explained here.
 
Poetry might be good on audio also.

Have one of AJ "Banjo" Patersons (great Aussie poet, may have written Waltzing Mathilda) compositions as a track on an Aussie CD, its The Man From Snowy River.

Absolutely great stuff, with the music, sound effects etc it really brings life to it -kids would love it I'd say.

Re the books, is it dramatised with sound or just read???
 
Most questions are probably answered on the librivox forums, I downloaded a chapter of call of the wild, it got about a minute in and then I just got interference, that normally means it was just a trial but I cant find a reference to any licences.

edit, found a reference to that problem in the forums, its a conflict with the id3 tags and windows media player. clear the id3 tags and it'll play ok in WMP.
 
I have been downloading stuff from Librivox for the kids for the last 6 months or so. I bought a couple of cheapie 256m mp3 players and now when we go on the road (or even at bedtime) the kids just fire it up and listen away. Every so often I download a few more books and change the stuff on the players.

I was looking for some Christmas themed ones, but Librivox doesn't seem to get new content very often. I found another site - http://storynory.com - which has a good Christmas section if anyone is looking for some Christmas content.

Does anyone know of any other similar sites ?

I think in this case that the copyright has expired in the United States (for Ulysses that is...)
 
Libraries have books on CD for kids and adults and it's free!!!
Plus you can change them the next day if you're not into your chosen ones.

Check out www.library.ie to find your library service's website, gives locations, openings hours etc.

And the staff are lovely
