I've been on the look-out for a 1.6 litre A4 for the last few weeks. Original budget was about €26,000.

I've been offered a 2 yr old 1.8T A4 with 25000 km on the clock for almost €29,750 from a main Audi dealer. I know this is a seriously more powerful car and a little less economical 8.2 litres/100km compared to the 1.6s 7.7litres/100km.

Of the base prices, this seems to be a good enough deal. Should I go that bit more for the 1.8T and treat myself! (Not borrowing for this car if that makes a difference).

Any opinions anybody? - on the offer or the car. Cheers.

If it's an A4 you're looking for I'd go with the 1.9tdi - power and economy over the 1.8. I drive a 3 series myself (which is about the same size/weight as the A4) and I couldn't imagine a 1.6 litre giving much driving pleasure, esp after spending 26 grand....

Firefly.

The 1.6L is underpowered for the size/ type of car.
Go for the 1.8T. Check carzone to benchmark the price but it sounds like a good deal.

Definitely recommend the 1.8T over the 1.6.
Recently traded my 1999 1.6 for 2003 1.8T and the difference in power is unbelievable.
I would even buy a slightly older 1.8T rather than a newer 1.6 if they were roughly the same money.

As previosly mentioned the 1.9Tdi is also worth looking at but I found a good one with low mileage hard to find.

In my experience any 1.8T's that I looked at were much better kept with lower mileage than the 1.9Tdi's.

Also if you are going for the 1.8T make sure it is 163BHP (also available in 150BHP) - and 190BHP I think but fairly rare

According the Revenue's site the A4 1.8T was only available until Nov. 2004. These cars have a reputation for giving some coil pack trouble. After Nov. 2004 2.0 engines became standard.

A basic one 150bhp is valued at €23k, and an SE 163bhp is €25k.

Thanks for the replies all. Rs2k - that's interesting from the revenue site. I'll keep an eye on that.

I'm arranging to have a look at it tomorrow or tonight if I can. The price doesn't seem bad based on these two on carzone: similar priced one here with more 5k more mileage and one here with 16k more mileage for €31950.

Don't know about the Revenue site but you can definitely get a 2005 A4 1.8T.
Mate of mine has one...

I just checked Parkers www.parkers.co.uk and Nov. 2004 was the last of the 1.8t A4's.

Your buddies car may have been built in 2004 and registered in 2005.

Am I missing something here?
There are 33 Audi A4 1.8T's for sale on Carzone.ie (2005 - 2007)

According to Audi.ie you can even buy a new one.......

Ive had a few 1.8T over the years and enjoyed them, however i did not realise how much better diesel is . Now i drive A4 2.0L Tdi 140bhp. and find it a brilliant alternative to the 1.8T. Even the 1.9 130 bhp tdi is a good motor .

I would suggest that the 1.9 130bhp is even better than the 2.0 tdi. Have experience of both and found the 2.0 tdi much less refined and noiser without much extra power.

Might have pushed myself a bit more for the diesel but all of the 2 year old 1.9s out there seem to be the 115bhp model. Haven't seen any 2 year old 1.9 130 bhps. So I wonder would I be better off coming up with another grand or two and buying the 1.9 115bhp diesel instead of the 1.8T 163 bhp petrol? (As JMR said, the 1.8Ts seem to have lower mileage).

The 1.9Tdi would be used as a company car a lot and would therefore be a bit of a workhorse compared to the 1.8T which would normally be privately owned and therefore have less mileage / wear and tear

Service Interval - Audi 1.8T - 25,000km

(Audi 1.8T - 25,000km - 2yr old )
I'm going to have a look at this today. Does anybody know the service interval on this car? Would it be due its first service yet or how does servicing work? Should I be pushing to have this included as part of the deal?

First service required after 15000 Km or 24 Months
If you are buying from a dealer it should be serviced before it's sold anyway

Like I previously noted the A4 2.0l tdi is far superior to the 1,8T, dare isay even the 1.9tdi.

If you do over 20K miles p.a then you really should consider the diesel !!
