Attic and Cavity wall insulation price

We are getting some work down shortly and im just checking to see if prices reflect other peoples experiences.

Our house is detached and is about 1800sq ft in size.

We are getting the cavity walls filled with insulation beads..

We are getting more insulation added to the attic to bring it up to the required amount, they are also raising a few of the joists and relaying a small area of flooring already there.

Because its a dormer we are also getting the spaces upstairs between stud walls and outside walls insualted to the required standard. Some of this is done but some parts need more and others have very little.

The price also includes a BER assessment

The grant amount is 500 euro and has been applied for by the contractor (checked with the SEAI that this is cosher)

The price net of the grant is 1050 euro.......those this seem reasonable/in the right ball park to people???

This seems reasonable without raising joists and relaying floor. With that included it seems very good. Is the BER cert included?

Have you a BER before the work done,,, is it an independent company doing the BER...

The BER assessment is included and I do not have one prior to the work>? Should I?

Hi Westy... that price is quite good for the size, but all depends on what the current level on insulation is at, within the attic space... Do you know how much that they are topping up by?

With regard to the space between the stud partitions and the outside wall - are they doing the floor insulation & the stud wall (between the joists)? Assume it's fibreglass insulation also? Have you easy access into the space?

Ideally, three detailed written quotations should be sought. So then you can compare like with like... their quotes should detail what is being put in where & how much of...

BER assessment should be independent - but all depends on what you are doing with that - you planning to sell / rent in the near future? I don't know how detailed their own BER assessment will be, could be just the "rating" before and after their work. Proper BER assessments will survey all the house and make recommendations on improvements...

It's a "piece of paper" with a rating on it... a "feel good factor" after the work is done if your house moved up a band... if you want an independent assessment, then you pay for it, and it's good if you are planning additional work in the future...or a necessity if you planning on selling / renting... Personally, I'd prefer to put the money into other things...

I think they are doubling the insultation in the attic , from 6 inches to 12 inches (something like that anyway). A very small part of the attic is floored and they will raise these joists and relay the 'floor'.

The way our spaces seemed to have been done intially was some on the outside wall and some on the floor. Fiberglass yes. Some parts were completely finished others were not, they are finishing it off and topping up other parts to the required level.

I believe a seperate guy is coming to do the BER assessment, they need one for the grant payment anyway dont they?

I was just curious if people thought the price was par for the course. Im convinved our issues are losing heat out through the walls rather than up through the attic.

Price is on par for what you are getting done, a good price in that. There is no harm in getting other quotes for the work though.

Off topic a bit, but how old is the house? Windows in a good condition? Doors ok? The sealing around them? The dormer bungalow is fun to keep heated in the winter... I'm in one myself. Another thing to look into is the fire, if you have an open fire, would you consider a stove? it's just getting to the level of comfort that you are happy with ...

Wev a bungalow, looked into cavity wall insulation, got free energy check from esb and he pointed out our cold areas all had doors or windows n a chimmey n access to attic...we got stove installed, insulated n draught proofed attic hatch, hung ready made insulated curtains on our front door, then I DIYed all curtains by handstitching fleece blankets from penneys into all curtains, got glass n timber frames with doors made to separate our kitchen from sunroom got one wall internally insulated as only wall with no rad or window on outside wall. House now holds heats amazing...wev timber ceiling in sunroom to really insulate but havent time to do it yet.

we werent about saving fuel money as turf but huge different in amount we burn now, at least half shed left as opposed to having buy more in as shed not big enough for few years.
