Attaching Insulated Plasterboard To Existing Ceiling

I'm thinking of putting insulated plasterboard on the ceilings in our house. It'd be a lot less messy if I attached them to the existing ceilings rather than removing them. Would it be possible and ok to do this? I know that it would slightly reduce the height of the rooms but that wouldn't be a problem as there would be less space to heat.
