Hi guys,
I am looking into doing a Degree at night in order to become qualified to teach. Can anyone reccomend a college to do an Arts degree by night? I am living in Dublin. I am 25, would I get any sort of Mature Student grant? Would anyone reccomend Distance Learning?Any thoughts appreciated! Thanks.

Carina you can do it in UCD either, well certainly a few years ago you could I did the first year and part of second year (its over four years minimum at night). I was doing four nights a week which I found too much it burnt me out totally. Depends how big a rush you're in to qualify you could do it over 8 years some people do that, but then you have the HDip afterwards as well. The grant would depend on your circumstances I lived at home so had to pay the whole lot but got tax relief at 20% its still not cheap though. Any other questions just ask,

Hi Carina, I did the BA modular on UCD. I just did one subject so I graduated with degree standard in that. Took me three years but I absolutely loved it. Great staff and met lots of people. 2 nights a week is tiring enough - i wouldn't recommend attempting the four. Lectures for me were 6.30 - 8.30 on Tuesday and 6.30 to 9.30 on Thursday. 12 weeks of lectures, then study leave, then twelve weeks of lectures, then final exams. Any other questions, just ask.

Hi Carina, you could study with the open university by distance learning. You might find this easier if you are working during the day. You will find that there are tutorials in Dublin. You can do a 60 point course each year and you need 360 for an honours degree. Some people manage 120 points a year but this is only recommended if you are an experienced learner. You should be able to get tax relief on the fees as there are no grants for part time study. ( unless someone knows different ) There are six or seven TMA's (tutor marked assignments ) during the academic year with an exam at the end. Usually runs from February to October.

Thanks a million everyone! I so could not handle 4 nights per week. I did two nights for two years for a Diploma (PR) and that was more then enough!! If you just did one subject & got the H Dip I wonder would you be qualified to teach that one subject.....Anyone know?

That's correct.

You can find out more about the BA Modular [broken link removed], and about the H. Dip [broken link removed].
