I know someone who failed their test today, and i would say having travelled with this learner driver, that they would have got their test with flying colours.
This person was delighted with the test that they did and felt that they had passed no problem. But were failed on not being able to use the Gear shift, clutch, or accelerator properly. Nobody could believe this.

The tester was a grumpy guy and no interest much in his job.
Are people getting failed for the extra revenue that it brings in, or for other reasons eg. ( keeping the place busy ).

People fail because they cant drive, not because the tester was grumpy and not as a revenue generating tool...

The above is fairly damning evidence that they should have failed. If you cant use the above three things you have no business in a car. Lots of people think they can use the above but

  • dont actually know what a clutch does, and what are the implication of pressing it
  • dont know what gear to be in going down hill

  • are constantly in the wrong gear (especially staying in first because its "easier" that changing into second when in slow traffic)

  • are coasting up to traffic lights

  • are accelerating while having the clutch pressed
Agree with Cayne's theory above that you fail due to poor driving, not the tester

Yeah I do tend to agree, but I only heard today that it is €38 to sit your first driving test and the €75 to sit your second if you fail. €75, thats criminal.

All tests are €75. But it's run by the public servants so the government actually make a loss on each one.
