If eg husband has a mortgage which might be defaulted on....is the wife liable? Or the jointly owned home?

You are only responsible for your own debts. However, if you own property jointly with someone else, your share of any joint assets can be seized or attached in respect of a judgment for the debt. That includes the family home.

I may be wrong here but I knew of a situation a few years ago where a woman had borrowed a large sum of money from a credit union unknown to her husband and he had to pay it back as he was advised that he could be sued for the money if she was unable to pay, which she was, as she had no independent income.....

I don't believe that was correct advice. Far more likely that he decided to pay the debt rather than let proceedings issue and a judgment be obtained with the adverse publicity and possible notoriety in the neighbourhood likely.

A lot of credit unions are still quite "local" and people know if fellow members have defaulted.
