Are IFAs really independent?

Hi Everyone,
I'm looking for a bit of advice on mortgages. Apparently Indepedent Financial advisers' commissions varies depending on the mortgage finance company they're working with. When I took out my first mortgage about 10 yrs ago with an IFA, the advice I got was somewhat less than impartial in hindsight...

I'm currently talking to a local company in the uk called Ardent Financial Services, http://www.ardentfinance.com , who seem pretty good but what should I be looking for and what questions should I ask?

I doubt if people on Askaboutmoney could comment authoritatively on the situtation in the UK. Try The Motley Fool or some similar site.
