Applying for a mortgage

My and my partner are looking for a new place. We were going to rent but are now considering seeking a mortgage. We are early 30's, not married, no kids, both in full-time employment and earn 65k between us (40+25) The most obvious stumbling block to me is that we don't have a huge deposit, around 10k between us. I would be confident of getting a loan from the credit union to bump this up to maybe 20k. We both have a good credit rating. I have a loan of about 170 a month which has less than 3 years left on it.

What would the chances of us getting a mortgage these days?
How long would it take to get approval?

Hi Larry firstly forget about getting a loan from the cu to bump up your deposit . Banks like to see a good consistent savings record and if they see that you got a loan to fund your deposit you can forget about getting a mortgage
I would also advise that if you really want to buy that you clear the loan you presently have with your savings and that is 170 euro more you have to put in to your savings.
Renting is your best option for the next year or so till you can prove to the bank that you have a good savings record also any rent that you are paying will be taken in to consideration by the bank as ability to pay . Best of luck with it

Agree dont get a loan to fund the deposit, try and clear current loan and aim to save an approx 10% deposit before you apply for mortgage

+1 to everything that has been said already. Pay off your existing loan now and get saving as hard as you can. Try to keep your savings in a separate savings account with an amount going in every month and nothing coming back out. It helps when you're applying for a mortgage.

Thanks for all the replies. I kinda knew the score really, just chancing my arm. As i said we never even thought about buying until a week or two ago and to be honest i am not the one pushing for it.
