Moved to germany this january. No German either!
Great place! Really like it here.
A few tips for you:
very few apartments are available furnished.
we had to buy all our furniture. none of the big stores take credit card only walmart.
had to pay 2months rent as agents fees- try to look up local websites.
Probably HR will organise all this though. Ours did not.
Rent here is either cold or warm. Cold rent is for the apartment only. warm rent includes cable, heating, water, and hausmaster bill (to keep stairs clean, help with any problem).
Set up a bank account asap. bring a copy of the contract and say that you need the EC card as soon as possible (normally takes 3 months).
This card is equivalent to Laser. All stores accept this.
Deutche telecom are cheap for calls to ireland and UK. 2.3 cent a minute with country select.
Bring a satellite box with you if possible. we have cable and only have CNN, MTV,
with BBC World after 8pm. Used to have SF2 (until 3 weeks ago) which shows good american shows e.g. lost, CSI, desperate housewifes and can change language to english. With Sky you should get RTE etc here.
Check your tv. Ours was a small portable that did not work here.
If you can think of specific questions, just post and i will answer them for you!
