Hi all.

Posting on behalf of a colleague who is thinking about taking up a job in Germany (Nuremberg). Would anyone have an idea of the rent payable on a 1 or 2 bed apartment in that area, or be able to point me in the direction of a website (in English naturlich!) that would give some indication.

Anyone got any experience of living/working in Germany?

Thanks.

I lived and worked close to Nuremberg for 6 months part of a student placement in college and I had a great time. Socialised in Nuremberg quite a lot and it was great for shopping. Can't give an idea of rent prices as I was living in a big student apartment block so it was obviously cheaper than a regular apartment (plus it was a few years ago now). Your colleague should call someone in the new company & get them to fax over a newspaper page with accommodation listings to get an idea of whats available.

The people were friendly, the pubs were nice and the beer festivals were great fun! If I got the chance to work there again I'd take it. At the moment I occasionally travel to other parts of Germany with work but my favourite region is definitely Bavaria.

Moved to germany this january. No German either!

Great place! Really like it here.

A few tips for you:
very few apartments are available furnished.
we had to buy all our furniture. none of the big stores take credit card only walmart.
had to pay 2months rent as agents fees- try to look up local websites.
Probably HR will organise all this though. Ours did not.

Rent here is either cold or warm. Cold rent is for the apartment only. warm rent includes cable, heating, water, and hausmaster bill (to keep stairs clean, help with any problem).

Set up a bank account asap. bring a copy of the contract and say that you need the EC card as soon as possible (normally takes 3 months).
This card is equivalent to Laser. All stores accept this.

Deutche telecom are cheap for calls to ireland and UK. 2.3 cent a minute with country select.

Bring a satellite box with you if possible. we have cable and only have CNN, MTV,
with BBC World after 8pm. Used to have SF2 (until 3 weeks ago) which shows good american shows e.g. lost, CSI, desperate housewifes and can change language to english. With Sky you should get RTE etc here.

Check your tv. Ours was a small portable that did not work here.

If you can think of specific questions, just post and i will answer them for you!

What about jobs (not expecting a favourable answer on this one)? My colleague would of course have a job, but his partner would not. She's currently working as a PA (1 year's experience), what would her prospects be in Germany?

With regard to jobs, check out any websites such as monster.de for english speaking jobs. If his partner has worked in PA, there should be opportunities. It may however take a couple of months- german economy and all that.

If I was in the same position again, I would negotiate terms with the prospective company etc. that they help with finding the partner a job possibly in the same company or be compensated accordingly!

otherwise, If they do move, the partner would be able to claim 3 months of stamps if she had signed on in Ireland for a couple of weeks before moving. Tell them in Ireland moving to Germany, and they organise the relevent document.
The job centres here are full of people looking for work.
Also, difficult to explain everything to them if you cannot speak German.
In my experience, most in job centre cant speak English- although they could be just saying that!!!

Yeah, that's what I felt.

Yeah, he's brought that up already.

Thanks for the info Smokeygirl, and thanks also to Cahir, very useful information on Nurmberg (another q-much of an Irish/English expat community?)
