I've banked with NIB for many years, and never had to pay charges on my current account (they've had various account types over the years that have offered this). I also have a mortgage with them, at a rate 0.5% discounted from their standard variable rate.

It was only recently that I realised that their LTV rate is even lower (at 4.5%). When I enquired about getting this they said it was part of their "packages", which involves current accounts with quarterly charges etc.

My question is whether there's anyone out there who's managed to get the 4.5% rate whilst still retaining free banking?

I've arranged to meet them "to discus my banking needs" and to be told about the wonderful benefits their various packages offer , but I'd like to know beforehand how hard I can press them to get the lowest mortgage rate whilst retaining free banking. Would threatening to move the mortgage (to Halifax for example) do anything?

I am due to take out LTV mortgage with NIB shortly.I have opened current account with them into which my pension salary goes.I think the account is only free of fees if you have a small number of transactions per quarter.

Yes, I have the lowest rate (LTV <50%) of mortage interest, and I have freee banking with them.

When you open or transfer your mortgage to their LTV mortgage you have to open a current account to service it. You have the choice of their 4 (iirc) current account types. I chose the free banking one (I think it's called Easy).

The only drawback of this account initially is that they do not pay your house valuation, whereas if you choose one of the fee paying accounts you get €100 towards the valuation. I think one of the fee paying accounts also pays interest, but in any event, all the info I was given was exactly the same as their leaflets, and their website.

I switched to NIB's LTV mortgage and have an Easy current account with them, which does not have any charges.

Me too.

I have the LTV mortgage at ECB + 0.50%, with a Easy current account with no fees.

I also repay every fortnight, to save on interest.

Thanks for the responses. I read their account charges document again and the "Easy" account only seems to have charges kick in if you exceed a certain number of paper transactions per quarter. Their "clear and simple" charges document is actually quite confusing.
