Re: pedigree pups?

why not get a rescue dog that needs a home instead of one that will have no problem getting a home ?

Re: pedigree pups?

Are you interested in info on the breed or reputable breeders?

Re: pedigree pups?

www.dogbreedinfo.com is a good site to research your breed, I suggest you do this carefully i beleive they are a bit on the mental side. Did you see the one they had on Dog Borstal it was a lunatic and quite agressive. They do like the others said have lots of dogs for rehoming in various shelters all over the country. Sometimes even pedigree dogs although you'd probably have to forget about a pedigree puppy the youngest is usually around 1.5 to 2 yrs old. I got my Chihuahua from a rescue best little dog you could wish for. Best of luck anyway.

You will get a list of Weiraraner breeders in Ireland on www.irishdogs.ie. I would also agree with other posters re: getting a rescue dog. I have 2 and have never regretted taken them in.

Re: pedigree pups?

If you do decide to buy a pup (against the very sensible advice of the posters above) make sure you research your chosen breeder very carefully. Ireland has a dreadful, and entirely justified, reputation for puppy farms (i.e. pedigree breeding factories where there is scant regard for the welfare of the dogs, zero attempt at socialisation of the pups, very little healthcare for the dogs, and a total lack of interest by the breeder in keeping a watch out for genetic problems).

If you want to see the benefits of getting a cross-breed from a rescue, contact Allianz Pet Insurance or your local vet and ask them for a list of health troubles specific to your chosen breed. Allianz always charge more to insure pedigree dogs due to their far higher propensity to inherited health issues.

Post on Irishanimals.com - there are often breed-specific rescues which specialise in a particular breed - these rescues will be fonts of knowledge, and will individually assess each dog for health, temperament, suitability for re-homing etc., something lamentably few breeders do.

Also, AFAIK the Irish Kennel Club does not vouch for any of the breeders it lists - it merely provides a listing service and does not inspect their dogs/facilities.

Re: pedigree pups?

Just getting my tuppence in too. I got a rescue greyhound about 6 months ago and out of all of the dogs I have ever had (German Shepherds, Corgis, Cockers and Jack Russells) she is by far the most fantastic creature. I was full of apprehension about getting a rescue dog but have not regretted it for a second. All of the stereotypes about greyhounds are wrong. They only need as much exercise as any similar sized dog, are incredibly affectionate, intelligent and loyal. Sales pitch over. If you want to come and see her,pm me, you'd be more than welcome.

Very true. Take a drive to ASH in Wicklow one day and you'll soon see it in a different light. ASH have plenty of pedigree dogs (and lovely mongrels!) waiting for homes. When I was last there they had some beautiful boxer pups. I rehomed a King Charles Cavalier and he's such a great little dog. He is house trained and so well behaved. I never regret getting him for a second.

hi folks, anyone know is there any websites out there in ireland that specialise in dog sales, in particular pedigree dogs, there doesn't seem to be much info out there

Totally agree about the puppy farms, a lot of them out there, especially in the North. I have a beautiful Samoyed and want to get another one but I'm going to go for a rescue dog, there are so many neglected dogs needing loving homes and they can make such affectionate pets.

I would contact the irish kennel club and ask for reputable breeders (to avoid puppy farmers) You will probably need to wait for your pup.

I have rescue dogs too and would recommend you consider that option...generally cheaper andn healthier than pedigree and you get that smug feel good factor!

As stated above the IKC do NOT vouch for any of the breeders on their list - they merely list their contact details.

Go along to a dog show and talk to the owners of the breed you are interested in. They will point you in the direction of reputable breeders or may even be able to sell you a dog themselves. The show results will also give some indication of who has the best dogs.

I have a relative who is very involved in showing dogs and he says that you chances of getting a good pedigree dog from a puppy farm is virtually nil. The best pedigree show dogs are usually bred by people who sucessfully show dogs themselves - and these are usually family outfits rather than large scale businesses as most dog showers are in it as a serious hobby rather than a profit making exercise.

Look up a site called champdog, gives a very detailed list of breeders and some have websites, mind you a lot are uk based but plenty of irish too

I'm assuming you're looking for a working dog rather than a show dog.

If so, the first question to ask any breeder is "Is it show strain"? If he says yes, then hang up and try elsewhere.
There are too many dodgy breeders who will pawn off a useless show dog as a working one, and if you ask are they workers - they'll of couse say yes!
