Love the look of black high gloss units but a little concerned that I may regret it!..they look stunning in the showrooms...but not sure how it will look in a 'real' house with 'real' living! Anyone have them...are you still happy with your choice or in hind sight are you sorry you did not chose some safer more practical colour..like white or cream.I have a dark floor also...but good natural and artifical lighting...

Stunning under professional lighting and adequate space to stand back and view............Don't...............and they show all marks..............a bit like a black car

We have a black high gloss kitchen, have it about 4 years now and still looks the same as when it was installed. It does look good, but if there are kids about they are totally drawn to looking at themselves in it and putting hand marks etc all over it! It cleans very easily with a wipe of a damp cloth.

Itl look good now but one thing i would worry about is it looking dated in a few years! But if you have a room thats bright and can take it and you want it then go for it

Thats a concern also Nigey..however...doesn't everything look dated after a while? What kind of kitchen doesn't date...Is it colour or style that will make it look dated? We have been through the wood stage...light woods were huge in the early 90's but now look naff...dark woods like walnut were big a few years ago but that trend seems to be declining...high gloss seems to be everywhere at the moment....which appears to be overtaken by painted matt right now.A friend tiled her bathroom floor to ceiling white...because "white tiles are classic...they never go out of fashion".Well that bathroom looks dated...and its due to the small size and shape of tile used....very 1980's...inoffensive no..but dated none the less. What is the secret...if there is one to creating a timeless kitchen?

We have black kitchen cabinets and all our friends remark how stunning our kitchen is. We also have a two year old who puts her hands everywhere. If you clean your kitchen regurlarly, what's the big deal with some hand prints. Take this bit of advice though don't go spending a fortune on a kitchen or granite worktop. You can spend 20k or 4k on a kitchen. Spend 20k on a kitchen or granite worktop and you'll never change it because it cost so much. Spend a reasonable amount on something you like, get it professionally fitted and change it in a few years if you feel like it.

Thanks NickyK for advice re the worktop.I have been weighing this up also...whether it is worth spending the extra...(ALOT extra!) for quartz/granite over a laminate. What colour floor and worktop did you put with your black kitchen cabinets? I have a dark grey slate floor so feel that nothing would work except for a white worktop...or maybe perhaps stainless steel.Unfortunately I can't seem to find a good looking white laminate...what I have seen looks cheap...unlike many of the black granite effect or wood ones...some are very realistic.I don't want a white cheap laminate that destroys the whole effect of having classy black units.

I have high gloss red doors from IKEA, they have been scratched by my young nephews, so check out how hard the gloss is!! I also have some matt black doors, which look great in combination with the red. They seem to scratch resistant and clean easily, although you will see finger prints from grubby hands on them. As with any coloured doors!!

Will you still love it when its 64 (5 years 4 months)? Kitchens are a bit like fashion, fads come and go but elegance is timeless!

It should give YOU the wow factor (if it does not?) and its all matter of taste.

Don't forget, if you boil a kettle under the doors, the material will lift!!

I don't think there is such thing as a timeless kitchen but some I think have a longer life span. I know what you mean but I do think a high gloss black kitchen would date much quicker than a more traditional one. And I think it would be harder to update as it would be such a statement. Like changing the handles or something! Have you decided yet what you are going for?
