Anyone else think the Dunphy show is rubbish?

RTE's Morning Ireland mistakenly made some reference to its rival, the Dunphy show, so I switched over out of curiosity.

I could stand only 1 minute of the rubbish. Dunphy sounded even more tired and emotional than usual and was trying desperately to be funny about 85 year olds using Viagra and drinking too much wine. Cringe making.:x

Dunphy

Give him a chance, if for nothing else than RTE really need a good dose of serious competition.

Poor show with what happened to McWilliams, but he did temd to focus on money matters, at the expense of other current affairs.

Morning Ireland is a parody of quality journalism, and has been discussed at length here before. And as for 5-7 live - spare us...Bring on the cull.

The way things are going, Dunphy will probably get snaffled up by Today FM, as their current policy seems to be getting all the tired old voices from 2fm et al, and churning it out (Dempsey, D'Arcy, Fenton (?) etc). In danger of losing the core audience. Abysmal treatment of Donal Dineen - probably 'our' best DJ.

Re: Dunphy

Haven't been listening to Today FM of late have they axed Donal Dinneen?

Dunphy

Haven't heard the bould Eamo yet but agree totally with comments earlier on 5/7 Live - brutal to say the least. Hard to know who is worse Rachel English or Philip Bouchier "how cool I am" Hayes. I find myself switching to Matt Cooper as a slightly better alternative!

Morning Radio

I listen to Terry Wogan

Never fails to brighten my day

You should try it

Where is Terry?

Toggie, as I was switching channels from RTE 1 through to FM 106 I thought I heard Woggie but imagined it must be a delusion, surely the guy is dead or sumfn'. What channel is he on?

Isnt it the radio program that keeps him alive ?

YD,

Of course you can get Beeb Radio 2 ( 'The Light Program' ) on Satellite, internet, cable link etc.

If, like me, you are driving around at the time then its very patchy in the hollow that is Dubhlin. I can pick it up around the outskirts of the town, in most of the country North of Dublin along the east coast & for a good distance along the Naas Road ( Strange ? )

As I have an ancient car with a proper aerial ( none of this bee sting nonsense for me ) I may have an edge on the bright young things with their smart new motors

Its on FM. Not really certain where. I tuned in to it when up the North ( received loud and clear ) and have at saved as a preset.

Toggie

P. S. You do understand that poor old Terry spouts nothing but utter tosh these days ? But it is very nice tosh. ( the sort of tosh that Heineken would do if they did tosh )

Dunphy

Risked it again this morning. McCreevey was on. Neither of them are able to speak properly but McC was refreshingly frank, I suppose now that he is effectively out of politics. Much better.

Dunphy

I have to say that I like listening to him. I don't always agree with him but he is entertaining and thought provoking.
What was the story with McWilliams getting pushed out?
Was he badly treated? I used to be a big fan of McWilliams but found he went really down hill over the last year.

Re: Dunphy and "The Fianna Fail Show"

I know it's early days, and he should be given a chance. But, he's been on three days, and had three guests. Two of the three have been Fianna Failers: Mara and McCreevy. He gave McCreevy a real easy time this morning, asked all the questions that have already been asked by other people and McC had all the rehearsed answers, I got the impression that he (McCreevy) had the list of questions in advance of the interview, but I may be wrong. Dunphy even ended with "you've done a magnificent job for your country" - surely that's a matter of opinion.

It's turning into "The Fianna Fail" show, just like the TV Chat show on TV3. Who will be on tomorrow, Haughey? or the builders?

Why doesn't Dunphy declare his obvious allegience to Fianna Fail, and cut out all this "North Side Working Class Hero" crap. He's a Fianna Fail supporter who lives in a mansion in Dublin 6. Nothing wrong with that, but don't pretend to be something you're not.

Good piece about Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh later in the show, I thought.

dunphy

Dunphy's show each day generally lives or dies by the researchers he uses. On the last word they were excellent especially with regard to non-Irish sourced contributors (we seem to have a small pool with the same people cropping up all the time).
Dunphy's relatively ground breaking attitude to interviewing both sides of the Northern debate usually ensured that we got to hear where each side was coming from and could make up our own minds without being influenced by the broadcasters own opinions as we get on RTE.
The current version of the Dunphy show needs a bit more time as at the moment they're bringing in the "big names" to try and get the audiences and there's nothing new to say. This combined with the fact that we're still in the slow-news months means that the show hasn't had a chance to develop the vibrancy that kept people listening to the last word.
That said had newstalk kept mcwilliams in the morning, replaced george hook with dunphy, their line up with kiberd, moncrief and gilroy also included would have nearly kept me from listening to any other stations.

re dunphy

Yes I agreed with the last statement. George Hook should have been moved to make way for Dunphy. Maybe after a year that is what will happen. The advertisements on Newstalk advertising Hooks show are cringe inducing. You'd swear he was some sort of sex symbol. It was ridiculous to get rid of david mcwilliams and the fact TV3 have dropped him is mind boggling. I suppose he didn't fit in with their target audience of female soap addicts. Even RTE seems to be only interested in the 20-40 year old female audience.

It's turning into "The Fianna Fail" show, just like the TV Chat show on TV3.
It is a bit alright but if so it is only going a small way to redress the utterly left-wing and pro union stance that RTE serves up every day. From Joe "I used to be a commie 'till I got rich" Duffy to George "red" Lee and the constant anti business, anti Fianna Fail anti anything that Pat Rabbit or sister whoever from the VDP doesn't like slant.
I don't like FF but every time I decide not to vote for them I hear the same well heeled, well paid champaign socialist mutual admiration society being trotted out on RTE and I get angry enough to vote for a clown like Bertie.
Rant over, c'mon Eamo.

I can't believe it, he had two FF cronies on this morning: Reynolds and Liam Lawlor.

He told Reynolds that he was almost single handedly responsible for the Peace Process.

And he allowed Lwalor to criticise the Tribunals. Dunphy failed to remind Lawlor that if he and other FF types had paid their taxes, there would be no need for the tribunals.

That's it, I'm not listening to Dunphy anymore. Morning Ireland might be bland, but I'd rather bland than constant apology for FF.

I predict Dunphy will be gone from Newstalk106 within twelve months, if he even lasts that long.

I didn't hear the show but Liam Lawlor!! That [insert word of your own choosing] should not be given the time to criticise anyone or anything. That's too far even for Dunphy.

yea, free speech and the right to answer your critics, who needs it?

Sure...you're right purple. Everyone deserves that right. I didn't hear the interview so I won't make any further comment on it. I just think Lawlor is a crook and wouldn't give him the time of day.

Liam Lawlor on Dunphy's show

I'd agree with piggy that I wouldn't give Lawlor the time of day and feel that he has a cheek to criticise tribunals. However, I feel that his presence on Dunphy's show comes under the same heading that I refered to above regarding northern politicans.
Dunphy may have decided that haranguing him wouldn't serve any purpose as Lawlor would get all defensive and the interview would become a joke.
As a reviled entity, interviewing him in a passive manner allows us to hear what he has to say and then make our own minds up.
Too many current afairs interviews are biased according to that media outlet's (or the interviewer's) agenda.
I'm fed up of being told what I should think by the media. I like to hear from both sides and make my own mind up and as such I like to listen to people that I don't necessarily agree with so that I can make my own decisions.
Allowing the media to dictate what we should think according to their barely hidden agenda is what gives us our "cult of personality" politicians where how they look/sound has become more important than what the stand for.

.

how they look/sound has become more important than what the stand for.

Hasn't this always been the case? whoever has the largest advertising budget wins the election.

(Has anyone noticed that FF is actually the same as FG?)

Well said waltermitty, confrontational current affairs do tend to only give the slant that the interviewer or organisation want to give, reference my anti biased RTE rant back there a bit.
