Hi All,
I've just had a tiler in today who did a lovely job but was a little expensive; well very expensive but still a lovely job.

One thing I noticed after he left was the following : when we bought the bath it had a thin plastic film covering the whole bath to protect it. The tiler actually tiled around that, siliconed the tiles to the the bath with the plastic film between the silicon and the bath, so the silicone is not actually touching the bath.

I rang him up and he said, that's fine - "Just cut off the film around the side of the silicone, when the plumber is finished the job, the weight of the tile, and the way it set will stop anything from getting through it."

Now my worry, is that over time the film between the silicone and the bath will get loose and let water out.

Can anyone let me if I'm unduly worried ?

Many Thanks,

Darragh.

This sounds like a shortcut and one which over time may lead to problems
I am right in saying that your tiler has tiled over a thin layer of plastic that peels away from the bath when lifted? Why would a tiler need to tile onto your bath in the first place? Did you ask for this or did he take it upon himself to do it? Sorry about all the questions but I need to get a better understanding of what happened here.

Hi Dober,

Yes, your right with the understanding and I deffinitely didn't ask for it anyway. I think he just missed it. He charged 600Euro for the day - although he also had to replace some old plasterboard also.

I think I'll just save myself the argument, cut it back and top it up with some silicone over it myself - or do you think I should chase him and make him do it ?

600 euro for a day! Jeasus I'm in the wrong line of work it cost me 400 for my whole bathroom and that included beading and grout and two days work and was finished to an excellent standard, I wouldn't touch anybodies mistakes as you may well end up taking the blame after attempting to fix it, I would certainly track him down and express your concerns if he is a professional about his work then he will agree to put right whatever you are not satisfied with.

Good Luck

Yes, I feel rightly ripped off. On one hand he worked very fast - ~15sqm. wall tiling, 3sqm. floor tiling and replacing old plasterboard in one day - but 600Euro cash is quite a sum to pay for about 11 hours work... especially when you notice a problem after... We had agreed on 460Euro upfront for the tiling; but he argued that the plasterboard was extra work.

I'm gonna give him a call and ask him to come back around.

I think the going rate (dublin prices) was €20 per square yd/ €24 m2 .... I think more of them are going for €25 per square yd now (as the paper said the other day the building trade engaging in hte SSIA spirit .. for every €4 we charged you we'll charge an extra €1 )

So on that basis if you got 18m2 of tiling for €460 it sounds fair enough ... the plasterboard is extra work alright ... but I guess if he did it all in a day on top of 18m2 of tiling it couldn't have been that much extra work !

No arguing with you there EvilDoctor; but what can you do when I guy says that's the price at the end of the day - tell him no, this is the price... in the quote I didn't mention the plasterboard...

(ps. if you do have a solution to this dilemna I'd be interested ... besides tiling yourself)

Hey guys, Thanks for pushing me on this; I called him up and he's coming back to fix it up, and do some touch ups.

He will have to remove the bottom layer of tiles to do the job properly. The bath should be filled to the top with water when he puts that layer in place and you should leave it filled for a day or so afterwards. If this is not done then the bath will pull away from the tiles over time as it settles on the wooden floor of your bathroom.
