My partner and i got rent relief back recently for 2007 and 2008. Revenue contacted me then asking did i want 2009 to be put on a tax cert now(said it would save us reapplying at the end of the year) I said yes.

The sent out an amended tax credit cert for 2009 and on it it says "Rent tax credit 400euro"

Now i dont know what this means- on the P21s we got for 07 and 08 the rent tax cred on the p21 was the amount we recieved back.

So im assuming it means we will get 400euro back at the end of the year. Is this correct?

There has been no changes to my partners wage slip at all since we got the amended tax cert 2 weeks ago

Is my partner supposed to give this amended tax cert to his employer?

You will get ti back pretty much straight away as tax credits are given on each payroll basis. i.e. you will (depending on how much tax you pay normally) get 400 extra on next pay day or if you dont pay 400 in that period you will get the remainder in the next pay period.

It seems that you claimed for the rent tax credit for 07 and 08 after these years.

And it seems that Reveune are now adding this tax credit to your 2009 tax credits, so that it will be reflected in your pay, rather than reclaim the tax after the year.

Does that seem correct?

The amended tax credit cert is sent to you AND to your employer. Read it, and you will see where this is mentioned.

my partner recently took a pay cut(the whole factory did) and they only take 67c tax off him now as his wages are pretty low now

You do not have to wait until the end of 2009 to get a €400 tax refund.

Each month your partner should be paying €33.33 less tax. (If they get paid weekly they should be paying €7.69 less tax)

And if the amended tax credit certificate is applied to your partners July salary should get a refund of €33.33 per month for Jan - June = €200 approx.

Has your partner got paid since the amended tax certificate was issued ?

A tax credit certificate would also have been issued to the employer as well as to the employee. However they may not have passed it on to the payroll person / accountant. Partner could ask employer about it, point out that tax credits have changed. It should all be very straightforward.

My partners wages have not changed a cent since we got the amended tax cert

the whole factory took a pay cut recently. Ive his pay slips here.

12th feb 2009
PAYE 1.22
PRSI 9.29
INCOME LEVY 3.59

tHEN THE PAY CUT

jULY 9TH 2009
PAYE -0.63
prsi -0.00
levy 7.00

So as you see he pays hardly any tax now as his wages have fallen below the tax line

He has been paid twice since we got the amended cert and theres no difference

You will need to look at the "Year to Date" figures.

If the cumulative tax figure is zero then there will be nothing to refund regardless of the increased credits.

You can only be refunded tax which has been paid.

Does he get paid weeKly, per fornight or per month.

It seems like he got a refund of .63 cent for PAYE on 9th July payslip.

nothing on here says year to date figures(if im looking in the wrong place sorry i just dont understand any of this) No figures on the amended tax cert are zero anyway.

Says yearly tax credits are 4073 if that helps in any way

Sorry.
I meant on the pay-slip.

It should have "Year to Date" figures for Gross Pay
Tax Credits
Tax Deducted

Well you put a - sign in front of the 0.63 (see above), so I assumed it was a 0.63 refund !

When the amended tax credit cert takes affect he should be paying no PAYE and should get a refund of what he has paid from Jan so far.

He won't get the full €400 refund for the year as he is currently not paying enough PAYE.

Tax credits cannot be offset against the income levy.

Tax Credits
Tax Deducted

Gross pay 8613.96
taxable pay 8613.96
tax cred TD 1695.36
cut off td 16829.76
paye paid 27.43 (bear in mind since the pay cut they havnt been paying anything hence why its so low)

Well he can get a refund of 27.43 and from now on pay no PAYE for rest of year (assuming his gross pay remains unchanged).

Better than being unemployed anyway.

Were his hours worked reduced also, is he on a 3 day week ?

No in order to avoid a 3 day week they made everyone take a pay cut and stopped sick pay, and if there is any overtime available(if orders need to go out in a rush) they dont get paid for it. So basically forced unpaid overtime

partner got an extra 25 euro in his pay packet this week- must be kicking in

though he also told me 5 employees have been fired today

That would be the tax refund.

Well it's the same in alot of companys. Better than job losses in my opinion.
