Hi,

Am I too late to claim eligible tuition fees paid in 2018 ? I had understood that I could go back 4 years, so I was hoping to get a claim in (via MyAccount/ROS) this evening, or early tomorrow.

I tried following the steps set out here: https://www.revenue.ie/en/personal-...tion/how-to-claim-relief-on-tuition-fees.aspx

For 2018:

  • sign into myAccount
  • click the 'Review your tax 2018-2021' link in PAYE Services
  • select the Income Tax Return for the relevant tax year
  • in the ‘Tax Credits & Reliefs’ page select ‘Tuition Fees’
  • complete and submit the form.

However, I'm running into a problem, after I select the Income Tax year 2018 - I can't seem to access the Tax Credits and Reliefs' page (see screenshot for message when I select the only button available to me). Am I doing something wrong, or am I too late to try and submit a claim for 2018 ?

Many thanks,

Were you registered as self assessed in 2018 in which case you should be doing a form 11 return via ROS rather than a PAYE form 12 via myAccount?

If I was you then I'd message Revenue via myAccount (or ROS if applicable) with all details of the claim so that when 2023 starts on Sunday they might still accept your claim for 2018.

Many thanks,
You were registered for Income Tax as a chargeable person for some reason in 2018 and should have filed a form 11 return via ROS. You could amend you 2018 form.11 return via ROS to claim the relief due.

Thanks for the responses. I had both PAYE and other income that year.
I guess that the "other income" was over c. €3k or for other reasons caused Revenue to categorise you as self assessed. In that case, as I suggested earlier, you probably need to use ROS proper (not myAccount) to file/change your form 11 self assessment return for 2018. Unless you can do that now then the only other option that I can think of is what I suggested above - email/message them with details and hope that they will accept and process the claim in 2023.

It was my understanding that only tuition fees in excess of 3K could be claimed at standard rate. Unless something has changed in last year or two & if so would it be applicable to 2018?

The disregard amount is €3,000 in respect of a full-time course and €1,500 in respect of a part-time course.

It's been that way for serval years now, if not more.
