Am I a first time buyer?

Hi there, I have a fairly complex mortgage interest relief query which hopefully someone might have a look at. I took out a mortgage originally in 1998. In 2008 we did some work on the house and remortgaged to get a top-up. Then in 2009 we switched our mortgage. Upon switching our mortgage figure was EUR112,000 (about EUR100,000 of this is the top-up). When I plugged my numbers into the mortgages.ie calculator yesterday it told me that (if I were a first-time buyer) then my interest relief per month should be around EUR80. For January, however, I only received EUR45. Having spoken just now with revenue, they say that the EUR80 figure is definitely wrong, as I am not considered a first time buyer at all by them, and that any interest I pay is only subject to relief at 15% this year (which does give the EUR45 I am getting). What I'm really looking for I guess is for someone to check out whether I should still be considered a first-time buyer and, if not, where is the 15% figure coming from and for how long more will I actually get mortgage interest relief.

I don't think you should be getting interest relief at all. AFAIK a top up loan is not considered as a new mortgage as it would be if you had moved house. You should have ceased receiving interest relief after the first 7 years.

I don't know if it would be categorised officially as a top-up loan, niceoneted, since we essentially got another mortgage, for about EUR100,000 on top of the existing one. The new mortgage has a new term etc. and because it was taken out in 2008, I always believed that it would be eligible for interest relief for 7 years as per one of the recent budgets. Thanks very much for all your replies
