Alternative to stone or grass for garden?

Hi and happy new year to all..

What alternatives are there to stoning or grassing a back garden?
The soil we have is too wet at times for grass to grow..
We are thinking of loose stone but was wondering if there are other options.. have approx 60sq.m to cover in modern landscaped garden.

If you want it grassed it's not that difficult to put in decent drainage.

How?

I built up the soil by about 80mm to level the garden before laying "rolled" grass..
I then forked it throughout hoping to drain all but it has gone back to being the same soggy ground.. I know the winter doesn't help but think stoning it is the best option..
