Hi,
We've been on VHI Company plan level 2 excess for the last few years. Two adults and one child.

Want to stay with VHI but am wondering if there's any other plan with the same cover (or better) that costs less - our renewal is over 3,800 for the three of us so it's a big expense. Renewal due first week in March.

We use our health insurance a lot and the day to day cover is very important to us, as is the option to pay a little extra for a private room.

I'd be very grateful if anyone has any ideas of plans that might be worth looking at.

Thanks a million

Hi aamusername,

Your current plan 'Company Plan Extra Level 2 Excess' will increase in price to 1713 per adult and to 417 per child.
So, your total family price would be 3843 per year.

There are a few alternative options to consider, with better cover at a similar price or cheaper price with similar cover.
Details as follows; The prices shown below include increases from 1 March 2020.

1. VHI PMI 51 10; adult price 1544pa; child price 382pa; all public, private and 3 hi-tech hospitals covered. private/hi-tech excess 125 per
admission and 125 per day case procedure. Private room 50 per night if required. Good day to day covered included, 75% refund, same as before.
Note; Whitfield Private Clinic Waterford, Bons Secours Cork, Galway Clinic not covered on this plan, so if they matter to you, this plan is unsuitable.

2. VHI PMI 24 10; adult price 1698pa; child price 371pa; all public, private(including private room fully covered), and 3 hi-tech hospitals covered.
private/hi-tech excess 150 per admission and 75 per day case procedure. Good day to day cover included, 75% refund, same as before.
Note;; The big extra on this plan is full cover for a private room in a private hospital. There is NO 50 euro per night to pay.

3. VHI PMI 38 14; adult price 1679pa; child price 536pa; all public, private and 3 hi-tech hospitals covered. There is NO excess to pay on this plan
for any admissions or any day case procedures. Good day to day cover included, refund of 130 per consultant visit, 75% refund per gp etc.

NOTE; All the above options have 80% cover for hip or knee replacement surgery in private or hi-tech hospitals.
This type of surgery is fully covered in Blackrock Clinic Dublin, no shortfall applies.
A 20% shortfall would cost 2k or 3k would be payable in any other private or hi-tech hospital.

Note; you can choose different plans if you want, to suit different medical needs per person or to make savings.

I know you prefer to stay with VHI, but for comparison purposes there is very good value with Laya and Irish Life.
Details as follows; The following 3 plans fully cover a private room in a private hospital.

1. Laya Prime Plan; adult price 1425pa; child price 400pa; all public, private(including private room fully covered) and 3 hi-tech hospitals covered,
private hospital excess 50 per admission and per day case. hi-tech hospital excess 150 per admission and per day case. Good day to day cover
included, refund of 125 per consultant visit, 40 per gp, etc. 20% shortfall applies to hip and knee replacement surgery but not in Blackrock Clinic.

2. Laya Principle Plan; adult price 1487pa; child price 400pa; all public, private(including private room fully covered) and 3 hi-tech hospitals covered.
private/hi-tech hospital excess 125 only payable on the second and subsequent admissions. Day case excess 75 per procedure. Good day to day
cover included, refund of 75%, same as before. 20% shortfall applies to hip and knee replacment surgery but not in Blackrock Clinic.

3. Irish Life 4D Health 4 plan; adult price 1586pa; child price 460pa; all public, private(including private room fully covered) and 3 hi-tech hospitals
covered, private/hi-tech excess 50 per admission and 50 per day case procedure. Good day to day cover included, refund of 75%, same as before.
There is a co-payment of 2000 for hip and knee replacement surgery but not in Blackrock Clinic.

NOTE; A child can be insured with VHI on their own, if it suits. So if one or two adults choose Laya or Irish Life plans, the child can stay with
VHI.

Plenty of alternative options, with better cover and good savings.

Thank you so much snowyb. Will look at the details of all of those plans.

I wouldn't totally rule out leaving the VHI, but we live near a swiftcare clinic and we've found it very useful over the last few years. I'll look into what the alternatives to that are with the others too.

Thanks again - it's just so hard to know where to start on the hia website with so many plans & it's such a huge help to have a smaller number of plans to look at,
