Almeria, Spain

Does anyone have any opinion on or experience of Almeria and surrounding area to spend a week in June? Would like a bit of sun but not looking for a beach centred week, would like an interesting and scenic alternative. Would the Almeria area provide that? Any other suggestions?

You're close to the Cabo de Gata national park, which is "spaghetti western" landscape. Unfortunately to get there you have to pass through the unattractive "costa plastica" (acres of covered vegetable farmland) but once you arrive it's well worth it and this does mean the coastline is less crowded than most costas in summer.
