Alarm system for rural house

Can anyone recommend an alarm system for a rural house? My sister has eircom phonewatch and the guards have never showed up even when the alarm had been ringing for over an hour and eircom had contacted them. I refuse to pay for such poor service.

What are the alternatives for a house in a rural location?

I know there had been idscussion on this before but it is a bit outdated and maybe there are more high systems out there.

The issue may be "deterrence" - not "giving the alarm".
A sign saying "trespassers will be shot" in several languages with a motion-activated light to illuminate it + a siren.
It might sound extreme, but if the guards don't respond to alarms, there are few alternatives bar a well-worded sign as a deterrent.
Dogs can be shot, drugged or poisoned and I think there are some recent court decisions supporting the use of lethal force against people invading your home.

If it is practicable I would definitely recommend the large dog option.

We lived for years on a fairly dark road in Dublin with the houses having secluded rear access. There were regular reports of burglaries around the area but thanks to a series of German Shephards we were never touched.
