Agricultural land

I'm considering purchasing a few acres of argicultural land as a long term investment. The Farmers Journal doesn't have much on offer.

Where is the best place to locate vendors?

How does the cost per acre vary throughout the country?

Land prices can vary drastically due to factors such as the availability of present or future planning permission or development and the extent to which local farmers are motivated to outbid each other for a holding that might be strategically or sentimentally valuable to them.

Auctioneers would be the best source of information on specific purchase opportunties but be careful as they will be working in the vendors' interests and certainly not in your own. Unless you have a very specific idea what you are looking for, and a very detailed knowledge of the local market, you stand a strong chance of being ripped off.

The average price for agricultural land in Ireland is around 15000 euros per hectare. The smaller the plot of land the higher the per hectare price. For instance if you were to buy a 40 hectare farm the per hectare price is usually lower than if you were to buy a 2 or 3 hectare plot of land. Also prices would be lower in the west of ireland than in the east.
