Ageing Brass

Here's an unusual one, How do I artifically age brass?

I bought an old porthole on Ebay recently but it didn't come with the brass bolts that would have been originally used to fix it. I now want to get some brass bolts but they will be all shiny and new so how would I give then a 'patina' or otherwise darken them?

Tks,
Owen.

Maybe theres a slightly dodgy antiques dealer out there who knows the answer ? ;)

I'm not a dodgy antiques dealer but I do know one and he told me that if you rub on some plain yoghurt and leave it on for a couple of hours or overnight it will do exactly what you want. I've done it, it works !

Ammonia also works as does anything containing ammonia (like urine!). For a heavy "patination" you can use a liquid soldering flux, although this is quite corrosive so be careful.
