aga flue chimney cleaning

I'm worried that an old aga in the house which is still being used and is serviced regularly may be leaking some carbon monoxide from the chimney in which the flue is connected up to. The chimney system is that the ground floor has the aga connected and there's a bedroom above with a fireplace which has not been used. The two are linked to the same chimney pipe/pot. Is there any way we could get the chimney cleaned without causing any more damage to the bottom flue connection or would the chimney sweeper actually be able to disconnect the flue pipe from the aga and clean from the bottom ? I dont think there's any problem to the connetion in the kitchen I'm just worried that the bedroom above may be getting some kick-back due to a blockage in the chimney at the top. I'm afraid my memories of chimney sweeps was sooty men who stuck pipes up from the bottom and collected any dirt that dropped. Has things moved on so that it could be done from the top down ?

Can't give any advice on the cleaning aspect but have you considered getting some to confirm your suspicious?
