Trying to negotiate their site and ages since flew with them. If I don't choose a seat on a European flight is there a charge ?

No and none with Ryanair either but you must check in 48 hours before your flight and they will assign you the worst seat on the plane, always the middle with me but I always got to move....

Thanks. Must I check in online with AL or can I not just turn up at the desk and get the seat allocation.

Agree about them always assigning you the worst seat they can possibly find...

Just pick the seat you like and pay for it, take the pain of a little cost early and then look forward to a stress free trip (on AL, it doesn't stop there if you fly with Ryanair sadly )

What?

I thought that you could not check in until 24 or 30 hours before your flight?

Some people don't mind sitting in the middle.

On short flights over to the UK, I take whatever seat is available. I don't mind.

On a longer flight, I pay extra to sit at the very front or any row with more space.

If I remember correctly, free check in with Aerlingus opens 30 hours before the flight, 48 hours with Ryanair.

You can check in at the airport with AL with no extra charge... Either at desk or via their self service machines.

While useful to have the option, I find check in, via their app, before I go anywhere near the airport, the faster option.

As for these time restrictions on how soon before a flight you can check in, they make no sense to me. What's the difference between me checking in online or via their app 4 hours before a flight and 2 weeks before the flight?

If you don't want to pay to reserve a seat you can only check in within certain time windows (see above).

When you check in on Aer Lingus within the 30 hours before flight, you can select your own seat at no cost. With Ryanair you never get to choose for free, but I have found checking in quite late often means I get a good seat that no-one was prepared to pay for.

With Ryanair you never get to choose for free,

I was able to choose for free with Ryanair some months ago, a few hours beforehand.

You are now allocated a seat on check in with Ryanair. If you want to choose a different seat than the one allocated to you, you must pay an extra fee.
