Hi, I am posting this on behalf of a friend. He was in a relationship and they bought a house. They split up, he moved out and continued to pay her 500 a month as his part of the mortgage. This was 2 years ago. House in negative equity so if could sell it, would have debt. For the last 6 months she did not pay the mortgage at all and pocketed his portion of mortgage as well. I feel he needs to meet with the mortgage company and pay them directly going forward his 500 bit bit then another friend said the mortgage is owed in full regardless of the split. All advice would be greatly received re options available. Thank you.

Where do you begin with this one?

He needs to make sure that he is paying his mortgage which he owes jointly and severally with the ex. They are both equally responsible for the whole of the mortgage. His debt ( and hers) will continue into the future so they both need to decide on how best to deal with their debt. But the debt will not go away on its own and they need to work out a strategy to deal with it. The ex's behaviour does not bode well.

Thank you. Am trying to work through the options and hope to coer tehm all :(1) Assuming he can get a mortgage, he takes on the deeds, all the negative equity with a view to being able to rent it out. Location of house not suitable for his work.
(2) Continue paying half as is but if ex not paying, then he is responsible for both. How to get her to pay something towards her share? She is self employed so would not get any help with mortgage.
(3) What if he does the same as her? Would have bad credit rating but at this rate, so will half the country?

It is a mess. There is a civil case as he signed for nortagae of 210k but real house mortgage was 190k and 20k went to her which he has never seen.
Does he have any other option I guess than the ones I have thought of?
Thank you.
