Hi All,
Could you please advice on this please,my partner has a full time job with a company and early last year decide to invest in taxi business, which he always drive when he comes back home from work and on weekends, because many of his workmates are also doing this,I ask him about payment of tax on this business to the govt but he said he will not need to pay tax as he has been paying tax on the normal fulltime work he's been doing, and also that he knows many taxi drivers who also work and are not paying tax to the govt,I'm just scared about this because I know he has to pay something back, because sooner or later the govt will know and he might be convicted, can anybody advice me on how to get around this please?

your partner needs to register as a self employed person with revenue. And, yes he does need to pay tax on his profit from driving taxi. He should either phone local tax office for advice or talk to an accountant.

You are right to be worried about this - he is completely incorrect to say that the tax he pays at work will cover his part-time work. The tax man is clamping down hard on this and he will end up having to pay the tax + penalties + interest. Just because the people he knows don't pay tax, doesn't mean he is exempt.

The revenue often target entire industries at a time and obtain data on that industry to assist them in this. The Taxi Regulator presumably has a list of every licensed taxi in Ireland so if at some point in the future the Revenue decide to focus on taxis this will likely be their first port of call so even part time taxi drivers will come to their attention.

Taxi drivers need a tax clearance certificate to get a taxi license and so the Revenue will be aware that he has self-employment income.

If he reckons that he doesn't have to pay Tax for all the reasons stated, I must only assume that he spends most of his time getting lost.

Where di any of us hear that as long as you are paying Tax on one job, it is Ok with the earning from another. Wakey Wakey !!!

Maybe if he converts hie euro takings to sterling and then converts it back to euro and then lodges in his personal account its ok.... well some people seem to think that ok anyway!

Hi Impega.
Your partner presumably has a psv licence and in order to renew this licence he will have to have a tax clearance certificate.

He must also register as a sole trader with revenue and register for income tax. He must pay tax on this income.

He can register online with revenue on the ros system. Log on to www.revenue.ie and he will find all the information he needs to do this.

He really needs to sort this out as the longer it goes on the worse it will be for him in the long run. Depending on his earnings his tax may be small enough especially if he is only doing part-time but nonetheless no matter how much it is he must pay it.
