Hi,

I am looking to for a nice relaxing week away in the sun, can anyone advise on quieter resorts with nice restaurants not as mad as Playa De Ingles but somewhere else in Tenerife or Gran Canaria (as have already been to Lanzarote)

many thanks

Just back from Christmas week in Los Cristianons(?) in Tenerife. We too have been to Lanzrote a number of times. Weather was great but the big draw back is the hills! its very hilly steep steps lifts everywhere diffeent levels etc. Considerable cheaper than lanzorte( Cafe con Leche €1, small beer €1, large €1.5, T bone 11-14euro. Taxies plentful. Resturents in Los Americas are much more upmarket than in in Los Cristianons ( u could walk between the two in15 mins). great shops there as well( Los Americas) Alot more UK and Germans than in lanzorte. Las Americas is lovely and very upmarket, alot more so than Port de Carman or Arricefia.
Funnily internet access was expensive( 2.50 for 15 mins on average)Other draw back, we booked a apartment via the "internet", alot smaller than described!
Beaches alot like Dollymount with out the dunes. No to many street traders or "PR's"
Duffently for families and older couples, didnt see( wasnt looking) for much nitelife.
Lanazorte 8/10, Tenerife 6/10

have alovely time

Peurto de la cruz in the north of tenerife is very nice.
An older crowd...no lager louts.
there is a long walk by the sea along the resort ...its not on the sand ...higher up
the beach is small ..not great but there is the"lago" an artificial pool set up.
It`s a fairly big place but really very nice and quite compact with a much more spanish feel.
there is the loro park nearby..aquarium,parrots etc
Plenty of resttaurants and nice irish/english pubs...all fairly close together.
ON gr can one could try mogan but this is very small

Gran Canaria is fine, as long as you keep out of central Playa des Ingles Kasbah centre and the 'irish centre'. Stay down the road in Maspalomas ( 3euro taxi or short walk) and its extremely pleasant, particularly now off season - indeed anytime in winter except for the 2 weeks around xmass and 1 week at easter. See Budget travel Vistaflor appartments for example for less than 300 euro ( 1 week) as a good example. I can post names of great restuarants locally if you wish (not pizza joints).

(PS no connection with Budget)

Thanks for your replies, re nice places to eat would be grateful for any recommendations for places as trying to avoid the english breakfast in the sun joints. Was also thinking of staying few days maspalomas and few days porto mogan, is mogan worth staying in ?

many thanks

Mogan is very pretty fishing village, worth a visit but IMHO not worth staying there as its so quite and nothing really happening.

Good restuarants as you come up to playa des inglis from Maspolamos and adjacent to 'Yumbo' shopping centre are:
1) Barbados (ground floor in same name apartment block), on roundabout beside Yumbo, fish very good, but everything good.
2) Las Cumbres, just down the road, avenue tirajana no 11. Very spanish, and specialist in lamb dishes. great ambience and service.
3) Mason san fernando ( street beside san fernando shopping centre) nearer to maspalomlas a little, take a taxi as you might not find it yourself. Again very spanish, good ambience, good food and service.
In all 3 cases, top price starter ( say garlic prawns), Main course ( say sea bass baked in salt , full fish each) , bottle of wine and coffee for 2 should be around 50euro total for 2.

enjoy!

You may also want to consider Puerto Rico in the south of Gran Canaria. Have visited there but haven't stayed there. The place seems to have a more upmarket feel than Playa des Ingles and the restaurants have a good reputation.

Hello

Can anyone recommend Apartments and/or Hotel at the lower level in Puerto Rico. Thanks

As an older couple we have been to canaries many times and found Gran Canaria suits us best. Our favourite area is Sonneland/Maspalomas area, we were there last Jan and stayed at the Vista Oasis apartments. They were quiet, clean, and walking distance to restaunants and bars. Favourite restaurant is Barbados a €3 taxi ride or a nice walk after dinner, if using this restaurant its better to book as they are very busy.

Hello

El Greco apartments are directly across the road from the beach and are gorgeous apartments. Pricey though and usually book up well in advance.

Hi,
i know you asked about Gran Canaria/Tenerife but have you thought of Fuerteventura? just back from our first trip there and loved it, have always been a fan of Gran Canaria but will go to Fuer anymore. Ryan air fly there now from Dublin and we stayed self catering in Correlajo.
The beach, bars, restaurants are all walking distance and bus to sand dunes costs a euro.
www.lobosbahiaclub.com is name of place we stayed in.

Used to live in Puerto Rico in my youth - great place to visit, too top spots I have stayed on recent visits

Anfi is a resort with its own private beach between Arguinigan and Puerto Rico.

Restaurants - Oscars, Gauantanemo (Tauro just past Peurto Rico)

Enjoy!!

Hi,

last year I went to Puerta de la Cruz in Tenerife, and really enjoyed it.
The town was pretty quiet, and no lager louts atall. Some lovely restaurants - had the best pizza I've ever had in spain and also had lovely fillet steaks cooked on a hot stone.
We hired a car and drove all over the island - the north west coast is really nice and unspoilt (trecherous roads though!). We drove down to the south coast, and I had heard terrible things about it, but it was nice too, not as built up as I had been led to believe.
Would definitely recommend it for a relaxing week.

Cheers,
Ragazza.
