advice on returning an item

I bought an item today for E143. I was in another shop and saw the same item retailing at E75.
I was utterly shocked at the price difference.

Obviously I'd like to return the item to the shop and get a refund in order to buy it in the other shop at the lower price, but as far as I understand I don't have a right to a refund simply because I've changed my mind about the purchase.

Does anyone have any advice as to how I could approach getting a refund. I thought of saying it was the wrong size for the place I need it - but I saw under the consumer law that that wouldn't be a reason for a refund either.

Advice please!!

Does the shop offer a price promise? Many do these day and will honour a price before or within a few days of purchase. This is in addition to your consumer rights and each shop/business will have their own terms and conditions.

Changing your mind

If you simply change your mind about a product you bought in a shop and decide you don't want to keep it, you do not have any rights under consumer law.
However, some retailers may offer to accept returns and give you an exchange or refund within a certain amount of time after the purchase. This is shop policy and a gesture of goodwill and not a legal requirement.

Babydays:

What is the returns policy of the shop where you bought the item?

Check the receipt. Sometimes it's written there.

Other than that, I would definitely try to see if it can be returned. No harm in saying that it just didn't suit.

You really have nothing to lose in trying to return it. Do it sooner rather than later.

I'll try to return it.

It is a bathroom mirror with built in lights. I got it from an independent shop - not a chain and saw it in B&Q later for half the price (it wasn't a special offer, just the regular price).

It's not that I changed my mind, I was with my partner who really liked it and just wanted to buy it. I felt it was expensive but went against my better judgement. I know buyer beware, but really such a price difference seems so unacceptable.

I don't think the shop has a price promise. Even if they kindly offer a voucher/exchange we didn't see anything else at all that we need/suits our house.

I'll give it a go though. AFAIK internet purchases do have a cooling off period but not face to face transactions.

Frustrating!

Had a similar problem last year when doing up our bathroom. Bought lights but found them cheaper elsewhere.
I went back to the shop where I bought them, explained that they didn't suit and would they take them back. No problem as long as I had reciept and all packaging. Amount was creditied to my debit card and bought same lights in B&Q for €35 cheaper.
If you don't ask you won't know. Play dumb, say the mirror was too big or you got a present of another one, anything at all really.

As a customer service worker from what i know you are entitled to change your mind i have done this many times myself all you need to say is it is too big for the room or it did not suit you are entitled to a refund. But as you say it was not a b&q or some shop like that they might offer you a credit note just say you prefer a refund as far as i know they cant refuse we cant anyway once proof is provided .

You need to read the legislation

If you simply change your mind about a product you bought in a shop and decide you don't want to keep it, you do not have any rights under consumer law.

Ya I know this most shops give 28 days to return a item the only time might not come across this is when it is a smaller shop which is actually were the op bought it i think so op you might have a problem but in fairness they should really. Always price around tough and this is why also that smaller shops are closing down because shops like b&q are woodys are cheaper. Thanks Ronan for that anyway nice to refresh the memory now and then .

Many thanks for all the replies and the courage boosting!!!

Went back this evening and was able to return the item.

The staff in the shop were not at all friendly on Saturday and of course less friendly today!!

BUT, have to give it to them once I explained that I had 'unfortunately completely got the size of my over-sink wall space wrong' they refunded me.

So, next time I think something is a bit expensive I'll walk away!!!!!

Off to B&Q tomorrow!

many thanks
