The rush for college accommodation will start soon so as a landlord who rents property mainly to students I thought I might offer a few pointers.
1. There may not be enough student accommodation, but there is lots, so if you get organised you should find something suitable.
2. Commit to times to be available for viewings. If you are in Mayo and want accommodation in Dublin start by deciding when you can be in Dublin to do viewings. No landlord is going to wait for a time that suits you. A Friday and Saturday is probably the best time.
3. Be ready with a deposit.
4. Know what you want. Anything, is not the right answer. Are you looking for a single room or a whole house to share. If a house share for how many. 'We can easily get another person' is no good. If it is a house share, the person viewing must be able to commit the group. Collect the deposit from the others in advance.
5. Check how the advertiser wants to communicate, and use that. A landlord will not want to check emails, and texts and WhatsApp, and phone calls and all the etc.
If you are communicating through a medium that shows personal info. be wise.
- Emails from maddogcharlie@xmail.com are deleted.
- WhatsApp profile pics with beer are a no no.
- Profile pics of young women with little clothing are a bad idea. I avoid them, you do not want a landlord who looks for them.
