I work part time (all I could get within 1 hour's drive) however I am only averaging 8 hours per week at the moment which is putting huge pressure on my partner. We have no kids and are only renting our house.

We live very quietly which is part of my problem as I am too proud to ask friends for advice? I know there is some sort of top up facility for low earners, can anyone give me more info on it? I know it would make sense to go Jobseekers Allowance way, but I like working!

Hi,

until your hours improve, you can sign-on for the days you are not working. So, if you are working on two days, you can claim for the other 3 days. Jobseeker's Benefit is not means tested while Jobseeker's Allowance is .

Being on Jobseekers Allowance/Benefit has other advantages than just the money. If you're on the payment for a certain length of time, then there are different schemes for education, training and other courses that can lead to job opportunities that open up.

If you're not on the system at all, then none of the supports that are designed to help people back into work will be open to you.
