Hi All

just wondering if anyone can give me some tips for interviews in colleges. Have an interview for a leturing post that I would love. Have approx 5 years experience of lecturing in an other IT - the first 3 years were part time and the past two were development work on various courses but still a lecturing contract.

Thanks in advance...

They're just like any other interviews, you have to sell yourself as well as possible.

It is highly likely that you will be asked about your experience in course development as universities/ITs are always updating courses and modules. So talk this up as much as possible.

Another likely question will be about your "philosophy" of teaching so prepare something convincing! Familiarity with any on-line teaching resourses that the IT may be using, such as Blackboard, would be a plus.

You should already know from the job description if the successful applicant will be expected to be involved in research. If so, then you will be asked about your research background and your plans for the future. These days, depending on the institution/department, research experience can count for a lot more than teaching experience.

One other tip I'd add to the above is to try to find out as much as you can about the particular institution/department you're applying to — current projects, planned developments, etc. Apart from 'flattering' them, it shows that you're motivated and seriously want this job, not just a job...

Thanks for these replies.. please keep the advice coming!

Indicate research in progress/undertaken. Be able to offer a comprehensive outline of the course you intend to teach, including a potted biography of the texts you would be directing your students towards. Emphasise your teaching career to date - the main thrust of all IT/University colleges is towards combining innovation in research with quality in teaching methods.
