Advice about painting floor.

I want to paint the floors in my bathroom a white or off white colour. I have visited a number of paint shops and there is very little floorboard paint on sale. There are various varnishes and woodstains available but I do not want these. Can I use an ordinary Dulux or Crown gloss paint that is ordinarily used for doors, skirting etc. Has anyone used a particular brand that they found good?

I have cannot recall seeing bathroom floors painted white.
Tiled, covered with linoleum, sometimes carpeted, but not painted.
Depending on the substrate, the floor may not maintain a good appearance.

Bathrooms are a mixed wear area - from wet bare feet after a shower to stilettos just before going out.
The conditions the floor surface has to deal with are quite onerous for a painted or even a toughened varnish finish
I strongly suggest you research all the available solutions for the proposed finish on your substrate (the floor itself) before selection.

All advice on AAM is remote from the situation and cannot be relied upon as a defence or support - in and of itself - should legal action be taken.
Competent legal and building professionals should be asked to advise in Real Life with rights to inspect and issue reports on the matters at hand.

I once worked in a hotel that had a new wing with the bathroom floors all tiled in white, whereas in the old wing they were tiled in lightish grey. Dust was SO much more noticeable on the white floors, even though both were cleaned daily and got pretty much the same amount of foot-traffic. So be warned. (Sorry, I know that doesn't actually answer your paint question, but it is worth knowing)

I'm planning to paint my hall floor one of these days and i was told about Johnsons floor paint by my painter.

Havent used it so no idea if it is good or suitable for a bathroom.

Sorry just noticed the colour, there dosent seem to be whitel

A friend in Oz painted her family room floorboards in an off white and it looks fabulous. Only drawback is visitors who wear rubber soled shoes as they cause scuff marks. She chose a really good (expensive) hard wearing paint by Fallow and Ball as she was advised some of the less expensive paints sometimes chip. Here are some links for floor paints.....

I will be doing this shortly.

On the advice of MCRB, I will be priming the boards twice with oil based primer and then painting it twice with the Little Greene Paint Company's white floor paint.

I've been told that Farrow & Ball's floor paint is good too.

I have done this in the past!.

As a poverty-stricken first time buyer, I've painted (and stenciled) concrete floors, wooden floors, mdf type, & chipboard. Least successful was the chipboard, more due to the finish of the wood than anything else.

The stenciled concrete floors looked surprisingly well; but it did take time to do.

Unibond (or similar PVA) sealer is essential as untreated wood will just soak up paint like a sponge.

Paint shops will try and sell you undercoat, I'm personally unconvinced that specialist undercoats are needed.

I have a big tub of cheap 'ceiling' paint (from Colortrend) which I have used as undercoat on just about everything I've painted and it's worked a treat.

Satinwood or eggshell finish from Colortrend will work very well on both wood and concrete.

I don't know that I would see paint as a long term finish for your floors though.

Garage floor would be a different story and I'd use the more specialist paints for that (colour range is limited, but that doesn't matter much for the garage).

Thanks. I have painted both my garage floor and downstairs concrete floors with specialist concrete paint and they are fine. I think from the advice above is to paint the floorboards first with a primer and then opt for a Farrow and Ball or Little Greene paint. Having said that I was up in the Stillorgan Decor centre where they have separate sections dedicated to Farrow and Ball and Colortrend and Little Greene Paint but I did not notice any specialist floor paint on display.
