Advert pop-ups on laptop

Hi. I was unable to watch DVDs on a laptop and downloaded 'free make'. However, since then the laptop is almost unusable as I have been inundated with endless pop-ups. (Not sure if relevent but was using chrome and getting message that it was no longer supported). I have uninstalled free-make, and after a bit of research I tried to clean up the HD in safe mode (F8) and used adwcleaner, Malwarebytes, popupblocker etc. without success. Can anyone recommend a solution or do I need to bring it to a computer outlet?
Any help appreciated.

Have you explored the possibility of restoring the PC to the point just before you installed 'free make'. If you google 'system restore' you will get all the relevant details. Also google VLC media player : it is an excellent free DVD & video file player. Cheers
 
I've used VLC media player before and have to agree that it's excellent as a video file player. However it doesn't support films that I've recorded from the telly:( Although it sounds a bit complicated I will check out the system restore feature. Thanks 1dave123.
 
Hey . I've just used the restore facility that you suggested ... and no pop-ups so far! Thanks for taking time to post a reply. BTW - can you recommend a more secure player and decoder for recorded DVDs (want to play and store DVDs to a memory stick). Thanks again for the helpful information you've provided
 
Hi Logo - that's great. Glad it seems to be sorted. As regards the DVD player, VLC is what I use and plays everything I have ever required of it. Beyond that my knowledge is very limited, I'm afraid.
 
No problem. Just spent hours today trying to revive the laptop. Thanks again for that info.
 
Never, ever, EVER trust pop-ups that tell you your browser might be out of date, or require an update, or that you may have a virus. This is especially true when browsing free software download sites. There are some legitimate download sites, but many more bogus ones who make money pushing spyware and adware.

That gets you half way there, you also need to verify the source you're downloading from. Plenty of sites offering legitimate software but pushing adware or malware to make money.
 
Thanks for the replies and information. I've checked out reviews on makeMKv and it appears to be ok. However, once bitten twice shy of downloading any free software. I'm tempted to download - it but then why believe the reviews or the source being downloaded from? Surely posting an apparent decent review is the first step to success for adware/ malware hackers.
