I hope to be recruited as a clerical officer in Castlebar in the Department of Justice.

Could anyone be of assistance in the following;

Are there any government offices in Donegal?
Is it possible to transfer to one of these offices or to a county council office?
How long must you wait before application for transfer?

In order to advance in the civil service must you apply for advancement or is advancement awarded on merit?

Hi Icon,

Have you looked here ?

As far as I know the Civil Service and Local Authorities are seperate entities.

There are Revenue offices in Letterkenny and Bridgend. There might be something in your contract tying you to Castlebar for a certain length of time, but you should apply for a transfer as soon as you go into the civil service, as it usually takes a while to move. You could also apply under decentralisation to move. And you usually must apply for advancement which is done through competition.

I'm up for interview for the Dept of justice in Castlebar - any ideas as to what is possible regarding flexibility of hours or part time when you're in the civil service ? For the dept of justice it's 40 hours a week shift . Do you need to apply for part time and then have it considered through some process or is it at the discernment of each manager.
Also re: promotions - any idea how long someone must be in the civil service prior to looking for a promotion ?

Generally you have to be established to look for promotion, and that is either one or two years. You can, of course, try any open competition that arises for executive officer, etc
