Additional items to House insurance

Hi all,

I want to add additional items to my house insurance. Does anyone have an estimate on the cost? I understand different insurance companies, different rules etc... etc... but just want an idea, as I was surprised at what they were asking

Thanks in advance

Depends on the item, something like an expensive diamond ring could be considered high risk, other things not so much!

Recently wanted to add a 1k bike (kept inside the house at all times when not in use) to my premium - was going to cost 35 per year just to cover theft from the house. Didn't go for it

When I worked in the area up to a few years ago the rates were more or less similar across the main home insurers at:
Unspecified All Risks 2%
Specified All Risks 1.5% (usually excluding hearing aids!)
Bikes 8%
However each insurer has different minimum and maximum sums insured for each category and different definitions of what items can be covered. So the only way to find out is to ask your own insurer, and ask for a breakdown of cost per item or category to get a better idea.

so I worked it our and they are charging 1.75% of the cost of the goods.. but I need to check what the terms and conditions are here... whether it is just theft from the house or lost out and about...

With that % rate it's All Risks cover, but of course check the terms of the policy. If you are adding items that were previously covered under general contents, you may be able to reduce the contents sum insured. It's also likely that the excess for items covered under All Risks will be lower than the general policy excess.

Regarding covering bikes, if the bike is kept in the house and no cover is required outside, most insurers allow bikes under general contents and there would be no extra charge other than the increase in the Contents sum insured, which would be much lower than adding as a specified item - however check your provider to be sure.
