my partener is setting up as a sole trader and is looking for an accountant to help register for tax/vat and do the books for the year.

does anyone know how much this should cost or is the answer how long is a piece of string?

any help would be much appreciated.

The latter. Just as in "my partner needs to buy a suit for a job interview. How much should this cost?".

Seriously he should ask friends or family for recommendations. Don't necessarily opt for the cheapest alternative.
