ABS light on

It could just be a dirty or faulty sensor. Or it could be something more serious-can't help more on that score I'm afraid.
 
All I know is , that a diagnostic check will cost you at € 45 ...........and the light can be switched off during this check , but it will not cure the problem ................

If light is flashing now and again .........it could be a faulty sensor , but it could also be a more serious fault .............worthwhile checking out
 
Don't delay over anything with brakes. Not worth it.

Diagnostic should aim the mechanic towards the fault.

Does not need to be a main stealer either.

Any mechanic worth there salt has the computer to do this.
 
I had the same problem and was thought the diagnoistics would find the fault, but the mechanic reckoned that he wasn't able to connect to the ABS unit in the test. Also the brake pad indicator came on 3 days before the diagnostics and someone suggested to me that perhaps the ABS fault couldn't be cleared down until I change the brakes first. Haven't had the chance to get it sorted yet, so I'm taking the bus till I get the cash together to fix it, ah the recession....
 
A similar fault occured with my VW Golf IV 1.9tdi It came on intermittently then after about 6 months came on and stayed on.

I took it to an auto-electrician who hooked it up to the diagnostics and told me that the 'lateral movement' sensor was shot. Over 400 Euro from a VW dealer but I managed to source one from a breakers yard for 120 Euro.

All was well after that. If it is the problem then you need to be careful which bit you buy. There are 2 different series depending on the year/make and, apparently, they are also specific to the bhp of the engine, i.e. a sensor sourced off a 1.6 petrol of the same model and year won't work in a 1.9 diesel. I think its something to do with the overall weight of the car, inertia etc but I'm no mechanic so feel free to correct me!

First stop electrician and then have a look in the UK for the part. There are more specialist breakers there and they're cheaper. Got my bit from a crowd in Essex (can't, unfortunately, remember who they were as it was a few years ago).
 
My Dad has a passat and the ABS light was coming on evey so often. He went to a local mechanic who found the problem to be wires on the sensor or going to the sensor had been nibbled at. My Mam had 2 kittens, one of which dissapeared so were blaming the cat for chewing the wires and more than likely being brought off in the engine compartment some day.
 
A couple of years ago, on my sisters 03 Golf Tdi, ABS light constantly on. It turned out that BOTH brake light bulbs were blown. Replaced bulbs and job sorted.
May not be your problem but an easy fix if it is.
