Abbey theatre in the GPO?

Given the state of the nation etc the aspiration that the Greens want the Abbey Theatre moved to the GPO by 2016 has slipped into the program for government without much commnet.

It appears that the GPO is due to be vacated as a post office (where do the 900 people work there go & where does it move to? Anyone know any more about this?)

To change it to a theatre, it would require that the current building be gutted. Its only a rather significant historical building after all, no biggie.

More people use the GPO as a post office than attend the Abbey theatre as a theatre.

My opinion is that these are two important institutions in their own right. By combining them, it would detract from both.

Anyone have any thoughts?

I think moving the National Library or some type of Modern history museum there would be a far better idea. It's on the main street of our capital...wouldn't a tourist attraction be a more culturally appropriate idea ?

ps.Have they still planned to rid O'Connell St of Dr Quirkies/Supermacs/McD's/Burger King etc ? That'd be a start anyway !

Maybe the Abbey can move into Dr Quirkies instead.
